Many new users, thing that the best hosting is either the cheapest or the most expensive. Nothing further from the true. A good hosting is the one that has everything your applications need, your users need, and your business need. Besides it has a good customer service and good technical support.
How to know? Ask the person programming your applications. The person who creates your site, should know what those pages need in order to function right.
Another thing to consider, especially if you are getting a small site which is most likely is the opportunity to advertise your website. Some servers are not as good as others for promoting your web-pages. Sometimes, your website is not even visible in some areas of the world. It you have the resources to promote your site inside and outside the Internet, this is not a major issue.
Another very important thing to consider is that if you are going to use free software like open source, you should have a server that supports it. Usually Linux or Free BSD are very good supporters of open source. Windows are not as good for this purpose.
On the other hand, it you are going to maintain your site in-house, and you use many MS software such as MS Office, Excel or access database. A window server is the best choice.
One last thing, but not the least important. Before you engage on the creation of any application or website, make sure that your designer or developer agree on using the resources you have available or that you are willing to upgrade to accomodate the new web application.
